The Seattle rapper has been crafting his sound since 2019 and in that time he has built something that genuinely stands apart from the city around him. Where the local scene tends to move in one direction, WON moves in another. He pulls from hip hop the way you’d expect, but he also absorbs punk energy and jazz sensibility, two genres that show up in the texture of his music even when the influences aren’t obvious. The result is a sound built around high-pitched melodies and bars sharp enough to make you rewind them. He describes it simply: he sticks out like a sore thumb and he means that as a compliment to himself.
His trajectory mirrors what the best independent artists are doing right now. Building slowly, staying consistent with visuals, growing Spotify monthly listeners through genuine momentum rather than shortcuts. His brother, who has been in the rap game since 2013, helped lay the foundation early, working with WON on his delivery and approach before eventually passing the torch. WON took everything he learned and developed something that sounds like nobody else.
His dream collaboration list tells you something about his artistic DNA: Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug. Three artists who each found a completely singular sonic identity and refused to compromise it. That’s the company WON is aiming for and the standard he is measuring himself against.
His new single “PLG from Atlanta” produced by NYC beatmaker @lofires is the latest exhibit. The song is built for repeat listens and good times, a straight energy record with the kind of wordplay that makes you stop mid-song and appreciate it.
